It's been a nice fall and sometimes a bike ride is just the way to spend a Sunday morning. From our house in Waldport, taking Highway 101 south toward Yachats is an easy start. The bike lane is generous and riding by the ocean is just beautiful. You can hear the waves crash on the shore, the seagulls flying high. The ride itself is not terribly taxing. The road is mostly flat, with a few rolling hills. On the way, while riding at bike speed, there are many things to notice: the beach, of course, but also the large green areas, the hills to the east, as well as the various art galleries, motels, and oceanfront homes. Arriving in Yachats, it becomes obvious why this small town is call the "Gem of the Oregon Coast": a quaint village, with small shops, cafes, and restaurants, and even a farmer's market on Sundays. We took Marine Drive off the highway and ended the ride at Yachats State Park, where views of the ocean, rocky shore, and tide pools are just beautiful, and it's a good time to take a well deserved break before the return ride home to Waldport.
